A Modern Christmas Carol

The classic Christmas tale, A Christmas Carol, where Scrooge is taken on a journey through Christmas past, present, and future to learn the true meaning of Christmas, was brought to life this weekend at the Zeiterion Theater. I have seen this musical so many times, so to be completely honest, I was expecting the same old adaptation I always do. However, I was surprised at how they modernized this play and incorporated hilarious jokes. The Nebraska Caravan Theater put a very entertaining twist to this classic story and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The stage was aesthetically pleasing throughout the whole show. There were gorgeous, intricate sets for each scene. The town scenes had different shops decked out in Christmas decorations. They also had streetlights and real snow that fell from the ceiling. The set of Scrooge’s house impressed me the most. It was a tall, beautiful mansion with cranberry curtains and a fireplace. Later on in the play, the fireplace emitted smoke when Marley popped out, which was also really cool. Marley’s bed also spun all around the stage when he was getting transported into past, present, and future. The set changes were really quick and seamless and caused the show to run very smoothly.

This musical had me laughing from beginning to end. I’ve seen A Christmas Carol many times and don’t remember ever laughing as much as I did watching this version. One of the most humorous parts of the show was when The Ghost of Christmas Past came to visit and she was just very bubbly and giggly the whole time, to Scrooge’s dismay. The Ghost of Christmas Past was played by a female which was also very diverse, as it is usually played by a male.

I highly recommend seeing Nebraska Caravan Theater’s A Christmas Carol this holiday season because it will truly put you in the Christmas spirit.
